Horsin’ Around with PALs

On Sunday, April 13th, 2008, Earth Connections and the Anaheim Police Mounted Enforcement Unit cosponsored their third Horsin' Around with PALs day at Anaheim Equestrian Center. Ava Roberts, Executive Director of Earth Connections and Sgt. Chris Pena of the Anaheim Mounted Unit developed the biannual daylong event in 2006. The event combines a variety of educational and life enriching components. At four individual stations staffed and taught by Earth Connections volunteers, youth from the Anaheim Police Activities League (APAL) learn about feed, nutrition, breeds, colors and markings; learn how to groom a horse; get to try their skill at working with the horse on the ground and, finally, each gets to ride a police horse. The Anaheim Police Activities League provides lunch.

The goal of the Horsin' Around with PALs project is to get kids outdoors and exposed to new environments and ideas in a fun and entertaining atmosphere. In collaboration with the Anaheim Police Mounted Enforcement Unit and the Anaheim Police Activities League, the hope is to help establish positive relationships among youth, police, and the community at large. Keeping kids off the streets and exposed to positive activities and relationships helps develop more productive citizens.
